BRUNSWICK
Brunswick police arrested two people for allegedly driving drunk and crashing into utility poles in separate weekend incidents.
The first crash was reported at 1:29 a.m. Saturday on Casco Road.
Police arrested Matthew W. Costa, 24, of Brunswick, charging him with operating under the influence.
Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan said the Dodge 2005 pickup truck Costa was driving snapped the pole on contact. The pole was on the vehicle and wires were down when police arrived. Costa was out of the vehicle and was not injured.
Hagan said the officer smelled alcohol on his breath, conducted a field sobriety test and subsequently arrested Costa.
Sunday morning, a vehicle struck a utility pole at around 12:24 a.m. near Mere Point Road and Maine Street.
Hagan said Nicholas Cardone, 22, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he lost control and struck a utility pole.
Hagan said Cardone walked home to Penny Lane, where police later made contact with him and arrested him on suspicion of operating under the influence.
