BRUNSWICK
Friends of Merrymeeting Bay will present “Archaeology of Ft. Richmond,” a talk featuring Maine Historic Preservation Commission archaeologist Leith Smith.
The Maine Department of Transportation is replacing the Richmond- Dresden Bridge over the Kennebec River, with the new bridge approach passing through the site of Fort Richmond, the first of the Kennebec River forts, constructed in 1721 and decommissioned in 1755.
The project also will affect the site of the Parks family homestead that was present between 1775 and 1830.
Archaeological work in 2012 revealed intact structure foundations, palisade trenches and fort-period artifacts, as well as refuse deposits from the Parks occupation.
Further excavations by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and local volunteers will only be allowed until July.
The talk — 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 — is part of Friends of Merrymeeting Bay’s 16th annual Winter Speaker Series, which is free and open to the public and features door prizes from Patagonia Outlet in Freeport.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
