MOUNT DESERT ISLAND — The Hyde School cross country team journeyed to Bar Harbor recently to participate in the Mt. Desert Island 5K.
The course was extremely challenging as the first half of the rugged terrain was uphill. Isaac Preston led the charge, finishing seventh overall. He also finished first in the 14-19 age group.
Captain Cody Mitchell was 10th overall. Hyde placed eight runners in the top-20 in a field of 150 runners. Austin Wang, Isaiah Mokeme and Talin Rowe rounded out Hyde’s top five. Sam Williams and Richard Liu continued to show improvement.
The distance crew of the Hyde Phoenix opened its season by winning the opening meet of the 2012 MAISAD cross country season.
The meet was held Saturday at Gould Academy in Bethel.
Preston (second overall) teamed with captain Cody Mitchell (fourth) to lead the charge. A strong finish by Wang (seventh) placed the team in position to seal the win.
Hyde’s pack of runners, consisting of Griffin Palola, Rowe and Mokeme, ran together through most of the race. Hyde placed four runners in the top-10 positions and six in the top-14 to run away with the meet.
Brian Edwards led Hyde’s jayvee runners.
