OLD ORCHARD BEACH

Alexa Koenig belted out four hits, but the Freeport High School softball team came up short in a 13-12 Western Maine Conference setback on Monday against Old Orchard Beach.

Koenig drove in four runs on three singles and a double, while Abbye Koenig picked up two hits, including a double. Brianna Welch singled, tripled and scored three runs as part of 2-for-3 afternoon.

But, OOB received a double each from Zoe Mazur and Morgan Howlett-Brown, while Howlett-Brown struck out nine and walked eight for the win.

But, the Falcons put up five more runs in the fifth, only to see OOB score four more in the bottom of the frame for a 13-11 edge. Freeport scored a run in the seventh and had the tying run on base, but came up a run short.

Brianna Bellefleur pitched for Freeport, surrendering nine walks and five hits with six strikeouts.

OOB has a gritty team and some good hitters, but I felt we had good control in the beginning,” said Freeport coach Jason Daniel, whose Falcons visit Wells on Friday at 4 p.m. “In the fourth we got caught up with a few walks and a couple errors that really pushed us back and gave OOB the edge. Both teams kept making things happening and we had a few plays that just went against us and you could see the frustration in my girls’ faces. We have a very good team young team and I believe in them as a coach and I am pushing to keep them positive.”
