BRUNSWICK

A Brunswick man arrested in May after a two-month investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and local police agencies has been indicted by a Cumberland County Grand Jury on drug-related charges.

On May 5, Brunswick police stopped a vehicle at a gas station on Pleasant Street in Brunswick and arrested Scott Coombs, 39, a passenger in the car. He was allegedly returning from the Portland area where police say he went to pick up heroin and crack cocaine to be resold in the Bath/Brunswick area.

According to the MDEA, Coombs had been under investigation for the last two months for alleged trafficking between the two cities. Police seized a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun, about $2,000 worth of heroin and $300 worth of crack cocaine, hypodermic needles, marijuana and Narcan.

Coombs was indicted earlier this month on five charges: possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, two counts of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, and criminal forfeiture.

The aggravated trafficking charge is a Class A crime, punishable by up to 30 years incarceration and a $ 50,000 fine. The first three charges are Class C crimes punishable by up to five years incarceration and a $5,000 fine.

A woman driving the car was also arrested for a trafficking charge. According to a spokesperson for the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, there are no charges against her at this time.
