We visited Old Orchard Beach on June 30 while passing through from North Carolina on vacation. After enjoying a morning at the beach, we refueled at Coastal Convenience on Saco Avenue at the forward-most pump.
After refueling, the man behind us said, “Move the f#@* forward so that I can get my truck in.” I replied that I didn’t want the clerk to think I was driving away without paying, so no, I wasn’t going to do that. He then replied, “Just move the f*#@ forward,” and I said, don’t talk to me that way.
His GMC/Chevy large SUV had a Maine license plate, and maybe he thought we were from New York because we had a rental car with NY plates on it. I informed the clerk what happened and he respectfully replied, “I hope you have a better day.”
Needless to say, we will not be visiting Maine beaches ever again, and it confirms the generalized impression that New Englanders are rude and abrasive.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
