BANGOR — A rabbit rescue, a surfing program for children with special needs, a living history farm and museum, and a county firewood bank were among the 2016 grant recipients for the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation’s Community Matters More program.

The ninth annual grant program awarded a total of $100,000 to 68 Maine nonprofit organizations chosen by a public ballot voting process.

The top vote getters, including write-ins, in eight regions of the state each received a $5,000 grant. Forty other organizations listed on the ballot received a $1,000 grant, and the 20 write-in candidates earning the most votes also won $1,000.

“Each year it is wonderful to see the variety of nonprofit organizations that receive support during the Community Matters More program,” said Bangor Savings Bank President and CEO Bob Montgomery-Rice. “From small home-based entities to large organizations providing services to thousands, Maine has no shortage of nonprofits that play an essential role in their communities.”

Among the Midcoast nonprofits receiving 2016 Community Matters More $1,000 grants were: Mid-Coast Conservancy in Wiscasset, and Curtis Memorial Library and Maine Lost Dog Recovery, both in Brunswick.
