BANGOR (AP) — Two newly constructed bat condominiums have been unveiled in Bangor to provide shelter for thousands of bats.

Each condo can house around 2,000 young bats, and provides optimal living conditions for maternity colonies. The condos will likely attract big brown bats and little brown bats.

Officials announced last month that Maine received about $20,000 in federal money to research and address white-nose syndrome, a disease that sickens and kills little brown bats.

Bat biologist Katelin Craven told WCSH-TV Tuesday that the condos are designed to capture all the sun’s heat and are painted black to get extra warmth.

Craven says these bats can eat up to their own body weight in insects each night, which could save about four billion dollars in the use of pesticides.
