GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Defensive lineman B.J. Raji will need six to nine months to return from right biceps surgery, though it’s unclear if he’ll be back with the Green Bay Packers.

Raji said Thursday he had surgery recently to reattach a tendon following the injury last month during a preseason game. It knocked Raji out for the 2014 season.

Raji had signed a one-year deal in the offseason to remain in Green Bay. He was having a good training camp after being moved back to nose tackle from end.

The six-year veteran from Boston College said he would love to remain a Packer, though he’s concentrating on his recovery and helping younger Green Bay teammates on the line.

Green Bay drafted Raji in the first round in 2009.

“Just knowing how this league and life works, you can never count anything out. It’s obviously crossed my mind … potentially I could be seeing my last games at Lambeau” Field, Raji said. “I’ve thought about it, but it’s not my primary concern at this point.”

Raji said he must wait for scar tissue to heal before starting the rehab process, but doctors have assured him that he’ll return to full strength.

“The recovery is not really an issue,” Raji said. “We’re almost certain that I’ll be able to be back at 100 percent.”

Vikings

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have released wide receiver Jerome Simpson.

The move was made Thursday, following the revelation of misdemeanor charges of driving on a limited driver’s license, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, and having an open bottle in a motor vehicle for Simpson from a July citation. Police in Bloomington, Minnesota, confirmed the charges.

He has a Nov. 3 arraignment in Hennepin County court, but with Simpson already serving a threegame suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, the Vikings didn’t wait to assess his status. He would have been eligible to return to the active roster Monday.

Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians says domestic violence is a worldwide problem and should be addressed everywhere, not just in the NFL.

He says that if the current so-called “scar” on the NFL leads to more awareness of the problem, then it’s, in his words, “damn good.”

Arians spoke to a mob of reporters after practice on Thursday, a day after running back Jonathan Dwyer was taken into custody at the Cardinals’ practice facility on domestic violence charges.

Arians says Dwyer expressed shock at the arrest and insisted he was innocent.

Arians says if Dwyer is found guilty, he is finished with the Cardinals. If he’s exonerated, then the team would welcome him back.

The Cardinals placed Dwyer on the reserve/nonfootball illness list, meaning he can’t play for the team again this season.

Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills starting receivers Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods have had a connection long before they began sharing neighboring lockers in Buffalo.

Though playing at colleges on opposite coasts, the two kept tabs on each other’s production in 2012 to use as motivation.

Woods, who played as Southern California, would track what Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins did at Clemson, and then attempted to top their production.

Watkins did the same with Woods and fellow USC receiver Marqise Lee.

That rivalry has taken on a new and friendly dimension between Watkins, the Bills’ first-round pick, and Woods, a 2013 second-round selection.

The two have begun showing flashes of their dynamic chemistry in helping Buffalo f to a 2-0 start.

The Bills host San Diego (1-1) on Sunday.

Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker sat out practice and cornerback Dee Milliner was limited Thursday, leaving their status uncertain for the team’s game against the Chicago Bears on Monday night.

Decker is dealing with tightness in his right hamstring after he aggravated an injury from training camp in the Jets’ loss to the Packers last Sunday. Coach Rex Ryan says Thursday he would like to see Decker “test it” during practice at some point this week, but indicated that the wide receiver could still play even if he doesn’t get on the field before Monday night.

Ryan says Milliner looked “OK” as the cornerback recovers from a high ankle sprain that hasn’t fully healed. He missed the season opener, but played at Green Bay in a limited role.

49ers

1SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carrier’s decisions to attend a small liberal arts college in Wisconsin and drop basketball for football paid off when he earned a spot on the San Francisco 49ers this season after spending most of the last two years on NFL practice squads.

Now he could get the biggest chance of his career.

With leading tight ends Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald nursing injuries, Carrier is expected to play a heavy dose of snaps when the 49ers (1-1) visit the Arizona Cardinals (2-0) on Sunday. Carrier caught his first three passes for 41 yards in San Francisco’s 28-20 loss to the Chicago Bears last week after Davis and McDonald went down.

Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles showed up for practice Thursday, albeit in a limited capacity, despite a high ankle sprain sustained last Sunday against Denver.

Charles did not participate Wednesday and there were fears that one of the game’s dynamic playmakers could miss several weeks. Chiefs coach Andy Reid has not said whether there’s a chance Charles will be available for Sunday’s game in Miami.

Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry, who is also sidelined by a sprained ankle, remained out of practice. Rookie wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas also did not practice after returning Wednesday from a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss the first two games.

Linebacker Tamba Hali was limited in practice. He’s expected to play against the Dolphins.
