BATH

Alan Orchard, the elderly man who fought to hold on to a home that had been condemned, died Thursday.

Yvonne Orchard said her husband, Alan Orchard, died Thursday morning at the couple’s Academy Green apartment on High Street. He was 81.

The Orchards had been staying there since July while volunteers, some with the city of Bath, worked to renovate their home at 45 Windjammer Way.

Yvonne Orchard found her husband not breathing at 3 a.m. Thursday, and he was taken by ambulance to Mid Coast Hospital.

The City Council voted 7-1 on Dec. 5 that the Orchards’ home was dangerous after the city code enforcement officer and an engineer inspected the building.

Acting on advice the home — which had serious structural problems — be condemned, a Sagadahoc County Court order served the couple an eviction order. Volunteers quickly stepped in to shore up the roof and make other repairs. In February, the Orchards learned the court order to vacate had been rescinded.
