German manufacturer BMW has had to boost its competitiveness in the SUV segment, where innovation and design are cutting edge. Though the company sells the very popular X5 for people wanting a full-sized SUV and the X3 for people in need of a small luxury SUV, it still lacked a vehicle in the compact SUV category. Not anymore. BMW can now satisfy even more customers with its X1, a direct competitor to vehicles like the Infinity EX, the Acura RDX, and the Mercedes-Benz GLK. The X1 has been on the European market since 2009, but now it’s being offered on our shores too, with a 2.0- liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine or the ever popular 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder in-line powerplant. The four-cylinder is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the sixcylinder comes with a six-speed tranny and allwheel drive system. There are no manual transmissions available. True to BMW form, there are quite a few options and upgrades featured in the X1 catalogue listing.
