BRUNSWICK — Pejepscot Historical Society and George T. Files American Legion Post 20 will hold a ceremony to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg at noon Tuesday, July 2 at the Chamberlain Statue on the Upper Mall in downtown Brunswick.
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1 through July 3, 1863, and is often considered the turning point of the Civil War. Helping secure victory for the Union troops was Brunswick’s Joshua Chamberlain, who led the 20th Maine in a decisive bayonet charge at Little Round Top.
The community is invited to join in a salute to Chamberlain, to all who served in the Civil War, and to the men of Brunswick who gave their lives for the Union cause.
Members of the American Legion will lead a procession to lay a wreath at Joshua Chamberlain’s grave in Pine Grove Cemetery. Ann LePage, wife of Gov. Paul LePage, is scheduled to take part in the ceremony.
