BRUNSWICK — Brunswick firefighters were called to Collinsbrook Road to tamp down a fire that burned an acre of field Wednesday.

Brunswick Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Emerson said the fire near 74 Collinsbrook Road was quickly contained after the 4:09 p.m. report. The field was bounded by a stream, woods and a maintained lawn that provided natural fire boundaries, he said.

Emerson said the fire is believed to have started as the result of fireworks.

Earlier Wednesday, firefighters were called to Dahlia Drive and Hollis Lane near Old Bath Road for a fire in a wooded area affecting about a third of an acre. Crews had limited access, so the fire was suppressed using portable tanks and hand tools, Emerson said.

Tuesday and Wednesday were Class 3 fire danger days with elevated winds, meaning fire hazard conditions were dry enough that the fire department suspended issuing burn permits.

Emerson warned of open fires this time of year.

“Conditions are often misunderstood, because people are of the understanding that the snow just left and the ground is wet,” he said, “and the fact of the matter is the ground is very dry and a lot of green growth hasn’t started.”
