GORHAM — The Little East Conference announced the results of its annual preseason women’s lacrosse coaches’ poll this week, and the University of Southern Maine Huskies were picked to finish fifth among the seven teams.
Defending regular season champion Plymouth State University was picked by the coaches to repeat as the top team, picking up six first-place votes and 48 total points. Keene State College, the 2012 tournament champion, was second earning the final first-place vote and 40 points.
Eastern Connecticut State University and Western Connecticut State University tied for third with 30 points, followed by Southern Maine with 23.
Fifth-year USM coach Lauren Reid has 11 players returning from last year’s side that finished 7-11 overall and 3-3 (fourth place) in conference. Among the returnees are All-LEC selections Rosie Forster, Jacki Kelly of Brunswick and Jenna Cyr.
The Huskies open their 17-game schedule on March 2 with a game at M.I.T. The Huskies are scheduled to play their home opener at Hannaford Field on March 7, hosting the University of New England.
