To the Editor:
Human misbehavior is not caused by weapons. Many psychiatric practices, however, do create deep upset and defiance in people, and do seem to be contributing to an increase in irrational behavior in our society.
The permanent labeling of our children, excessive use of powerful psychotropic pharmaceuticals, involuntary commitments, physical restraint and wrongful incarcerations are putting way too many people under excessive pressure. Many feel their lives are being too “fenced in” and threatened by the psychiatric erosion of their constitutional freedoms. Psychiatric “specialists” have undermined the common sense of parents, teachers, judges and policemen and have increased societal stress with many foolish notions that frequently boggle our minds. We should work to curtail and clean up the field of mental health and do everything we can to clarify our laws so that people will feel more secure. This would reduce violent behavior in our society.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
