Topsham American Legion Post 202 will present a “Four Chaplains Sunday” service this weekend.
On February 3, 1943, the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was torpedoed by a German U-Boat off the coast of Greenland. Of the 902 on board, only 230 survived.
Many of those survivors owed their lives to the courage and leadership exhibited by four heroic Army chaplains who gave their life jackets to save four soldiers and, in so doing, gave up their only means of survival.
The four chaplains, who were each of a different faith, will be honored during this service, as well as 40 servicemen from Maine.
The event — presented by members of Topsham Post 202, Harpswell Post 171 and Brunswick Post 20 — begins at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Topsham post, 79 Foreside Road.
The public is invited.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
