A Durham man was arrested late Wednesday night after a traffic stop and charged with carrying drugs and a gun in his car.
Freeport police officers Jerod Verrill and Paul Chenevert stopped Alex D. Hersey, 24, of 36 Beechwood Lane, at the intersection of Durham and Bragdon roads at 11:51 p.m. for a defective tail light. During a subsequent search of the car, the officers found a loaded 9-millimeter hand gun, two glass smoking pipes and what Freeport Lt. Susan Nourse described as “a usable amount of marijuana.”
The gun belonged to Hersey, Nourse said, although he has no permit to carry it. Hersey has no criminal record that she was aware of.
Hersey is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, having a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, and sale and use of drug paraphernalia. He was released on bail Thursday morning and is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Nov. 6.
Sgt. Nathaniel Goodman also assisted in the apprehension.
