BRUNSWICK
A proposal to build a new police station will go before public scrutiny Monday.
The Town Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the project and a $5.5 million borrowing proposal to fund the project during its regularly scheduled meeting Monday at 7 p.m.
Two years of committee work produced the current 20,000-square-foot plan that would move the Brunswick Police Department headquarters from the bottom floor of the municipal building at 28 Federal St. to a new station at the corner of Pleasant and Stanwood streets, property that is currently owned by the Brunswick Development
Corp.
Building a new police station has been a town goal for many years. Townspeople at the polls in 2003 rejected a proposed public safety complex, which the police and firefighters would have shared, on downtown property not far from where the central fire station is located.
A previous proposal to have the town buy land for a police station at the corner of Pleasant and Stanwood streets stalled after townspeople filed a petition that objected to the council’s approval of a bond ordinance for the project.
After that, town officials added citizen representatives to the Police Station Subcommittee, which evaluated other sites — including land at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station — before recommending the project that will be up for discussion Monday night.
Town councilors can choose to approve the current proposed bond ordinance to borrow $5.5 million for the project, reject it or to send the question to voters in a November referendum.
That bond would cover what town officials described as “hard costs,” such as construction and materials, and “soft costs,” such as legal fees and architectural design fees.
John Eldridge, Brunswick’s finance director, projected that the town could borrow for the project at an interest rate of approximately 3 percent, though that figure could change depending on when the bond proposal might gain approval.
In December, the BDC presented the Town Council with a letter declaring that “the BDC intentions are limited to providing these properties to the town of Brunswick for the police station project.”
Town Manager Gary Brown said late last year that exchanging that property for the town’s current municipal building has been discussed as one option for the town to acquire the land for the station.
The town offices are scheduled to move into Bowdoin College’s McLellan Building — near Brunswick Station, facing Union Street — in 2014 as part of a deal signed late last year to swap that building for the Longfellow Elementary School building on Longfellow Avenue.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the town council chambers at Brunswick Station, 16 Station Ave.
