DURHAM
Fires in Durham and Pownal overnight Thursday into Friday destroyed two unused buildings, one at Tupper’s Pit — also known as Copp’s Pit — on Pinkham Brook Road in Durham, and the other on Hodsdon Road in Pownal.
Durham Fire Department personnel responded at 12:26 a.m. Friday to a report from an Androscoggin County Sheriff ’s Department deputy who spotted flames in the Durham pit from several miles away, according to Durham Fire Chief William St. Michel.
The unused office building, owned by Copp Excavating, was fully engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived, and was a total loss. No injuries were reported.
Lisbon Fire responded to assist because some Durham crews were already providing mutual aid to a fire on Hodsdon Road in Pownal, St. Michel said.
Additional information on that fire was not available at press time.
