‘Mad Science of Maine’

The Portland Public Library will present, “Mad Science of Maine: Fire and Ice,” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the children’s room at the library.

Children can watch impressive science demonstrations, such as foggy dry ice storms and gravity-defying beach balls to a Mad Science burp-flavored potion.

The program is designed for kids ages 5 to 12.

The Mad Science program is part of a series of events for the Portland Public Library’s Children’s Summer Reading Program. For more information, go to www.portlandlibrary.com.

Paint for Preservation

The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust will hold its fourth annual Paint for Preservation Wet Paint Auction benefit from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ram Island Farm.

Thirty artists will paint in scenic locations throughout town, and the public is invited to watch artists as they work.

The pieces painted that day will be presented for sale at the evening auction. The proceeds will benefit the trust’s initiative, Saving Cape’s Great Places.

Tickets to the auction and reception cost $50 in advance and $60 on the day of the event. They are available at the land trust’s office, 330 Ocean House Road, or at www.capelandtrust.org.

Two hikes at Shaker Village

Carol Beyna, a trained naturalist, will lead two nature hikes at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Route 26.

Beyna will guide participants through the Shaker farm fields, the woods down to Sabbathday Lake and Loon’s Point, and back over the footbridge at Aurelia’s Cascade.

Organizers suggest to call and reserve a spot in the hike.

The cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children; and free for children under 6.
