‘World focus’ at the library

Springvale Public Library, 443 Main St., will offer several “world focus” activities this week.

“Stories From Around the World” will celebrate the World Bread Festival with a bread-tasting party, served potluck-style, from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday. Volunteers are needed to make and donate a variety of breads. Recipes are available at the children’s desk.

A free “Teen Craft & Quest Stamping Around the World” event will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday for grades 6 through 12. The library also will sponsor award-winning magician Mike Bent, who will bring his “Magical Stories From Around the World” show to the Little Theatre in the Nasson Community Center, at 21 Bradeen St., from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Monday.

UNION

Bus tour of historic sites

The Union Historical Society will sponsor a second Come Spring Bus Tour departing at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from the Old Town House on Town House Road.

The bus tour follows the Georges River Scenic Byway, identifying many historic sites where Union’s early settlers built cabins and lived. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling 785-5444 and leaving a message.

The library’s annual book sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday; the 1933 classic movie “Little Women” will be shown in the outdoor amphitheater at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Attendees should bring blankets or chairs for seating.

Saving seeds at Merryspring

Merryspring Nature Center, off Route 1, will present a talk on saving seeds by Neil Lash at noon on Tuesday.

Training for pre-diabetics

SMMC Visiting Nurses will host a pre-diabetes class from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Southern Maine Medical Center, classrooms A and C.
