THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND’S Office of Citizenship and Service Learning recently received a $4,035 grant from the Community Building Grant Program of the Maine Community Foundation to establish a literacy and math tutoring program in which UNE students with Federal Work Study will be recruited and trained to tutor elementary and middle school students at the Biddeford Middle School, the Loranger Middle School in Old Orchard Beach and the C.K. THORNTON ACADEMY alumnus Kevin Savage, class of 1970, has received the school’s 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award, sponsored by the Thornton Academy Alumni Association to recognize outstanding lifetime accomplishments. Savage is a fourth-generation Thornton Academy alumnus. His grandfathers, parents and daughters all are TA graduates. Savage is president and chief executive officer of the Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, an associate trustee at Thornton Academy and a board member at Wardwell Retirement Community.

PORTLAND

SPACE IS STILL available for Portland Ballet’s two-week intensive summer dance workshop with guest instructor Joseph Jefferies. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning this Monday through July 29 at the studio on Forest Avenue.

The workshop is open to intermediate and advanced dancers ages 12 to 17.

Jefferies has danced professionally for 14 years, most recently with Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo. He performed with the Portland Ballet Company during 2010-2011.

Fee is $700 per dancer. Pre-approval is required. For details, call 772-9671.

RUTH WHITE, the oldest resident in Falmouth, celebrated her 105th birthday July 7 at Falmouth by the Sea with friends from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Falmouth.
