The early history of Gorham is inscribed on this monument at the corner of School and Church streets. In a town meeting in 1805, the townspeople approved erecting the stone and raised $50 for it. It was first located across School Street near the corner of Capt. Toppan Robie’s store (now site of the Odd Fellows Hall). The stone has been at its present location since 1886, when Gorham celebrated its 150th anniversary of the arrival of settlers. Formerly a grant called Narragansett No. 7, Gorham was incorporated as a town on Oct. 30, 1764.
