CAPTION ONLY:
Sea Scouts, from left, Alec Sirocki, Alex Whittemore and Nolan Scheemaker, are standing under two of the three, 16-inch gun barrels on the gun mount of the battleship USS Massachusetts, which the scouts visited late last month. They slept in a berth, ate three meals and saw inside the guns, the shell and powder rooms, sick bay, bridge and other parts of the battleship. They also saw various historical displays and the other World War II ships at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass. The three are students at Scarborough High School and officers of their Scout Ship. Sea Scout Ship12 is part of the Boy Scouts of America. It is chartered by the South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club and serves young men and women ages 14-21. The U. S. Coast Guard has provided meeting spaces and seamanship training. Their leader is “Skipper” Steve Birmingham, from Cape Elizabeth, who can contacted for more information at 799-9067.
