Even without snow on the ground, there’s plenty to do with the kids this weekend.
If you need a break from the rounds of Santa visits and tree lightings, and you’re looking to make a special holiday memory, here are two suggestions.
This week we feature a perennial holiday favorite, “The Snow Queen,” and a free annual event, the Maine State Museum’s special model train exhibit.
PORTLAND
Portland Stage has created an enchanting holiday production of “The Snow Queen,” a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of devotion, bravery and the triumph of love.
When Gerda’s best friend Kai is bewitched and imprisoned by the mysterious Snow Queen, the young girl embarks on a journey to the land of winter to save him. Shows are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday at noon and 5 p.m.
Tickets are $40 for adults, and $15 for children 15 and under. Discounts are available for groups, seniors and students.
Portland Stage is located at 25A Forest Avenue, on the second floor. There are numerous parking garages in the area.
AUGUSTA
The Maine State Museum at the Capitol complex is holding its annual Model Railroad Celebration this weekend: Friday until 4 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with free admission for all. Come and see the railroad and the miniature towns dressed up for the holidays, and learn how to set up your own.
