AUGUSTA — A free fishing weekend is just ahead for everyone in the State of Maine.
On Saturday and Sunday, any person may fish in Maine without a license, except for those who have had their license suspended or revoked. All other rules and regulations, including bag and possession limits do apply.
“It’s our hope that families take advantage of this weekend, and take advantage of what Maine has to offer,” said Andrea Erskine, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. “We are looking for future anglers to carry on the tradition.”
With a free fishing weekend, anglers in Maine will have a lot to fish for. Ponds are stocked with more than a million fish each year. And, they’ll have a lot of room to do it — Maine has more than 30,000 miles of streams and rivers, and more than 3,000 lakes and ponds.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
