In this era of divisiveness in our federal government, Mike Michaud’s record of bipartisanship stands out like a green oasis in a barren desert. It was Congressman Michaud who worked alongside Sen. John McCain as mediators during negotiations between the House and Senate on the VA compromise bill. This paved the way to provide more than $15 billion in emergency funding to help the Department of Veterans Affairs. As ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Michaud was a lead negotiator on the bill, which included many ideas he originally introduced.
The bill includes an extension of the Project ARCH (Access Received Closer to Home), which served about 1,400 Maine veterans who otherwise would have had to travel as much as 600 miles in round trips to and from Togus.
Mike Michaud’s involvement with Project ARCH is just one example of his dedication to veterans. His work on the VA reform bill is an apt demonstration of his ability to lead, listen and work across the aisle to get things done.
He will make a fine governor.
