A Harpswell man escaped serious injury after crashing his pickup truck along Academy Road late Friday.
Bowdoin Fire Chief Tom Garrepy said rescuers were called to a reported rollover with possible ejection on Academy Road at 10:49 p.m.
Chief Deputy Brett Strout of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department said Phillip Smith, 24, of 37 Heron Lane, Harpswell, was traveling south on Academy Road when he lost control of the 2001 Chevy pickup truck he was driving and collided with a tree. The preliminary indication is that speed was a factor, Strout said.
When he arrived, Garrepy said Smith was lying beneath the front of the truck, having likely crawled out of the vehicle after the crash. The truck came to rest on its side against a large tree with the rear of the truck wrapped around the tree.
Garrepy said Smith was taken by Lisbon ambulance to a field near Dead River and Litchfield roads, where a medical helicopter landed and flew him to Central Maine Medical Center. This morning a hospital representative said Smith was not listed as a patient.
Based on the damage, Garrepy said he thinks the truck probably rolled at least once. There was a dog in the truck that was uninjured. A Brunswick Police Department team is reconstructing the crash.
Strout said the crash is being investigated by Deputy Matt Shiers and Deputy David Hudson.
Litchfield Fire Department also responded to the crash.
