BRUNSWICK — Independence Association has named Sen. Stan Gerzofsky, DBrunswick, its first “Legislator of the Year,” after he convinced the state to place one of the group’s clients into a private care facility.
The agency serves 250 people with disabilities from Brunswick to Topsham.
Gerzofsky, the incumbent state senator from District 10, which includes Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell and Pownal, will receive the award during the agency’s annual association membership and awards dinner tonight.
Recipients are determined by the Independence Association’s board of directors.
Independence Association Executive Director Ray Nagel said Gerzofsky convinced the state to place one of its clients into a private home-care facility after his parents, now elderly and “medically fragile,” were unable to care for him by themselves.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
