BATH N— The Bath Police and Fire departments worked together Saturday morning to rescue a 13-year-old Bath boy who had fallen into the Kennebec River and was floating on a large piece of ice.

The boy was treated and released at the scene by Bath Emergency Services.

At 3:45 p.m., police and fire personnel responded to the Kennebec River for a report of a young male floating on a large piece of ice.  A passerby saw the boy and called police and fire.

This was just north of the Sagadahoc Bridge. The current in the middle of the river was rather strong, police said.

Upon rescue’s arrival, the boy was located floating a few feet off shore. Bath Fire personnel worked to extend a safety ladder from a stationary piece of ice to where the boy was located. This allowed the boy to crawl across to safety. The boy was wet from the waist down.

Bath Iron Works Security boat also responded to the scene.

This situation could have easily been tragic if it were not for the resident who saw the boy and the quick rescue efforts of the Bath Fire Department, Police Chief Mike Field said.
