WOOLWICH – The Selectboard is negotiating with a local Realtor to purchase 3.85 across of land bordering Nequasset Cemetery on George Wright Road, on which the town could build a new town office. And they don’t have a lot of time to get it done.

The board met for about 40 minutes in executive session this morning with a Remax agent. When the board returned to public session, Chairman David King said that the board is awaiting more information from her, so that it can make a decision.

The property, located a short walk across Nequasset Road from the Municipal Building, is listed for $65,000.

Lynette Eastman, town administrator and treasurer, reminded board members that she needs to get material to the printer by April 1, so that it can be included in the town meeting warrant. The likely date for this year’s town meeting is May 8.

King said that the Selectboard will meet later this week to make a decision on the property.

I think we impressed on (the agent) the need to have this done quickly,” King said.

The board will meet again on Monday to finalize the town meeting warrant, he said.

King said that town officials are hoping to build a new, one-story town office on the land. The fire department and Emergency Management Services would remain in the currently municipal building.

The Building Committee had proposed renovating and enlarging the Municipal Building to accommodate more town office and meeting space, but the Selectboard believes a new building is a better option.
