Brunswick students are outpacing peers statewide and nationally in Maine High School Assessment/ Logical Reasoning tests given to third-year students each May, Assistant Superintendent Greg Bartlett told School Board members Wednesday.

In critical reading, Brunswick’s average score is 513, compared to 462 statewide and 496 nationally. In the past five years, Brunswick’s score has improved seven points, compared to drops of six points in Maine; three nationwide.

In math, Brunswick scored 490; the state average is 467; 514 nationally, with a five-year local gain of eight points compared to no gains in Maine or nationally.

In writing, Brunswick scored 506; the state, 451; 488 nationally. In five years, Brunswick rose 23 points; the state and nation dropped four.

Bartlett said he will take this information to China, where Brunswick schools are recruiting students.

“The Chinese do not care about athletics and they do not seem to care very much about extracurricular (activities),” Bartlett said. “But this is the kind of data that they seem to want to know about.”
