The granite foundations and rusted machinery along the Stevens Brook Trail point to a time in Bridgton’s history where the landscape looked markedly different than it does today. But beyond these obvious clues, the landscape itself also provides evidence of transitions due to human and natural disturbances.
Join Lakes Environmental Association to learn how to read the forested landscape along the Stevens Brook Trail on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. Meet at the association’s Lakes Center, 230 Main St. to walk to the trailhead.
The acclaimed book “Reading the Forested Landscape,” by Tom Wessels inspired Lakes Environmental Association yearlong series of the same name. The series began with a book discussion group followed by a presentation and guided walk with Tom Wessels.
Although not required, familiarity with the book is recommended for the walks. The associations Watershed Education Director, Bridie McGreavy, will facilitate the walks and encourage participants to explore the forest to reconstruct the landscape history. Thus the program will focus on helping participants develop their own natural history interpretive skills.
