Gray town councilor Alison Libbey resigned on Sept. 4.

Libbey, who served 15 months on the council and was recently elected council chairwoman, said she resigned because she is moving to the town of Yarmouth.

Libbey said the move was prompted by the death of her husband six months ago.

“It was a very difficult decision to make,” Libbey said. “I’m grateful to the people who elected me and to the council, who felt I was worthy to chair the council.”

“I am going to miss Gray very, very much,” Libbey said.

Libbey said she may want to again serve in local government in her new town.

“I’ll miss her,” said councilor Andy Upham. “I think she’s a good person to have on the council.”

“I think it’s unfortunate. I think Alison was doing a wonderful job,” Upham added.

He said, however, that he understood Libbey’s decision.

Because of her relocation to another own, Upham said it precludes her from serving on the council in Gray.

The town announced that it is accepting applications for the vacancy. The deadline for applications is Sept. 27 and interviews for applicants will be on Oct. 8.

A special meeting of the town council will be held on Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. to announce the new council member.
