
Connelly Early, who started the season with the Portland Sea Dogs, is being called up to start for the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday against the A’s.
Early, a 23-year-old left-hander, will start in place of Dustin May, who is being placed on the injured list.
In 15 appearances, including 12 starts with the Sea Dogs, Early was 7-2 with a 2.51 ERA. He struck out 96 and walked 29 in 71 2/3 innings before he was called up to Triple-A Worcester. Early made six starts for the WooSox, going 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA.
Early was drafted in the fifth round out of Virginia and has pitched 45 games in three seasons in the Red Sox system.
Boston acquired May at the trade deadline from the Dodgers. In six appearances, including five starts with Boston, May is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA. In 28 1/3 innings, he has struck out 26 and walked 13.
