BRUNSWICK

The Bowdoin College field hockey team remained unbeaten with a 4-2 midweek NESCAC win over Bates on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) put up three firsthalf goals against the Bobcats (0-2, 0-2 NESCAC).

Elle Brine sent a corner insert up to Elizabeth Bennewitz, who swept the ball back to the post. Brine tipped in her first goal of the season 10:52 into the game.

Bates tied the game at 1-1 as Emma Patterson pushed the ball into play and later swept in a shot from the near post.

Bowdoin regained the lead just two minutes later after Emma Stevens tipped in a deflected ball from Kara Finnerty, who made it 3-1 on a solo effort with 10 minutes remaining in the half, collecting her own rebound and putting the ball in net.

The Bobcats came out charging in the second half and cut Bowdoin’s lead to 3- 2, two minutes in. Again, on a corner, Bates converted as Riley Burns slid a pass to Grace Fitzgerald, who blasted the ball into the cage.

Ten minutes into the half, Bennewitz lined up a shot from the top, off a feed from Brine to restore Bowdoin’s two-goal edge.

Bowdoin held an 18-8 edge in shots, but both teams earned seven corners. Adelae Durand made four saves in her start before giving way to Ellie Bauer, who made three stops. Maddie Ferrucci made a pair of saves for Bates.

Bowdoin heads to Wesleyan on Saturday with a noon start.

BOOTHBAY 3
LISBON 4

Sydney Plourde scored a pair of goals to power Lisbon (2-3) to a Mountain Valley Conference win over Boothbay.

Jessica Schlotterbeck and Mallory Fairbanks added a goal each, while Peyton Gosselin and Schlotterbeck chipped in an assist apiece.

Lisbon, which hosts Hall- Dale on Friday at 4 p.m., led 3-2 at the half.

Chloe Arsenault, Riley Sullivan and Lexi Lane (from Arsenault) scored for the Seahawks (1-5).

Rebecca Budesheim had nine saves in the win, while Boothbay netminder Maren Whitney turned away five shots.

Volleyball

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin fended off Maine Maritime Academy in its home opener on Wednesday evening in Morrell Gymnasium, 3-0.

The Polar Bears (6-0) remained unbeaten with the 26-24, 25-12, 25-23 win and have won 18 of their first 19 sets to open the season. Maine Maritime fell to 5-4.

The first set was the most competitive of the evening, with MMA holding the lead throughout. With the teams tied at 24, Bowdoin closed out the set with kills from Sydney Salle and Sophia Pahl to take a 1-0 lead.

Bowdoin cruised in the second set, opening up an early 7-2 lead. After the Mariners closed the gap to 7- 5, the Polar Bears used a 7-1 run to pull away.

The Polar Bears appeared to have put the match away in the third set, leading 18- 12. But MMA rebounded with a 7-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. The teams traded points until 23-all. An attack error by the Mariners, followed by a kill from Adrienne Miller, completed the Bowdoin sweep.

Pahl ended with a teamhigh eight kills for Bowdoin, while Allyson Hawkins finished with seven. Kate Kiser had 25 assists and six digs, while Lisa Sheldon ended with 17 digs and two aces.

WELLS 3

The host Warriors captured a win over Brunswick/Mt. Ararat at Wells.

The Dragons fell to 1-4 and host York on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Brunswick/Mt. Ararat, which dropped set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-18, was led by Chloe Coombs, who had six kills and 11 digs. Kathleen Trapp had three service aces, seven kills and six digs. Naomi Martin added two service aces and two digs, with Lauren Whitlock chipping in three service aces, two kills and 13 assists. Jaden Lohr also contributed two kills and two blocks.

Girls soccer

KITTERY — Lily Kemp scored two first-half goals as Traip Academy built a 3-0 halftime lead on its way to a crossover win against Richmond, which fell to 3-1.

Kate McPherson had a goal and two assists for the Rangers (4-0), and Molly Sawtelle and Grace Robillard also scored.

The Bobcats play their home opener on Friday against Valley (4 p.m.).

Boys soccer

WISCASSET — Matt Chapman tallied a hat trick to power Wiscasset/Boothbay to its first MVC win of the season, 4-1 over Dirigo.

Chapman’s goals came over a 14-minute stretch. Rowan Kristan added a goal from Tim Chappelle.

Jeremy St. Germain scored the lone Dirigo goal.

The Wolverines visit Carrabec on Saturday at 1 p.m.

RICHMOND 0
0TRAIP 1

Teddy Driscoll scored the only goal at 32:29 of the first half to lift Traip Academy (2-3) to a crossover win over Richmond at Kittery.

The Bobcats suffered their first loss (3-1) and host Valley on Friday at 4 p.m.

Kyle Tilton had four saves in the Richmond net, while Jayce Nielsen turned away three shots for the Rangers.

LISBON 3
WINTHROP 1

The Greyhounds earned their first MVC win while handing the host Ramblers their first loss.

Jared McLaughlin staked Winthrop (3-1) to a 1-0 lead midway through the opening half.

Lisbon’s (1-3) Jack Tibbetts finished a pass from Levi Levesque to tie it late in the frame.

In the second half, DJ Douglass scored unassisted for a 2-1 Lisbon lead, and Elijah Fullerton put the game away.

Sean Moore had a dozen saves for the ’Hounds, who host Spruce Mountain on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
