PORTLAND
John Biewen, creator of the “Seeing White” documentary radio series, and his regular guest Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika will speak about Northern racism, whiteness and radio documentary on Saturday, Feb. 10, in Portland.
The free event, “Seeing White: That’s Not Us So We’re Clean,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Hannaford Hall on the University of Southern Maine campus. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Organizers moved the event to USM from Space Gallery to accommodate high ticket demand.
Biewen, audio program director at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, explored the notion of “whiteness” in a 14- part radio series for his Scene On Radio podcast.
The presentation will include a general introduction to the series for people who haven’t heard it, and a version of the conversation between Kumanyika and Biewen that was part of the original episode.
Registration is required and available on Eventbrite at seeingwhite.eventbrite.com.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
