BABSON PARK, Mass.
Nikki Wilson opened the 2017 Bowdoin College women’s soccer season with a pair of goals less than a minute apart to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 win at Babson on Tuesday afternoon.
Babson’s Maggie McCabe nearly broke the scoreless deadlock in the 40th minute when her shot from 20 yards bounced inside the six and nearly over Rachel Stout’s head. McCabe also saw an attempt blocked by a Bowdoin defender near the back post in the 43rd minute, and Katherine Cullen’s rebound from the corner of the 6- yard box deflected off the post and out of danger.
Midway through the second half, Wilson bested Maddison Gierschick to put Bowdoin on the board. The play developed as Julia Patterson worked the ball down the right side and fed Aine Lawlor inside for a shot. Gierschick turned away Lawlor’s initial bid, but Wilson cleaned up the rebound on the right post and put Bowdoin ahead 1-0.
Wilson doubled the lead just 30 seconds later.
