St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, will be holding a series of 3 suppers, the proceeds of which will be applied to the Steeple Fund matching grant.
The first supper, spaghetti, will take place July 17. It will be followed by a bean and casserole supper on July 31 and the final supper of fish chowder on Aug. 14. Each night, the dinners are scheduled for 5:30- 6:30p.m. As well as the featured main dish each evening, there will be a salad bar, various breads, a dessert table and your choice of beverage — all freshly made by members of the Episcopal church.
The St. Philip’s steeple is the oldest and tallest in Wiscasset. It was designed by 19th century architect Francis H. Fassett who also designed the church’s American Gothic rectory. Since 1857, the steeple has presided over weddings, baptisms, funerals, and Sunday services, as well as many outreach activities.
The spire was in danger of crumbling when a matching grant was applied for and awarded by the Maine Community Foundation to stabilize the steeple. The work has been done, but the church is now in the throws of paying its half, hence the supper series.
