A new business has opened in Brunswick that offers a mix of Eastern and Western medicines to focus on a mind-body health connection.
Husband and wife team, John and Nancy Charlebois, who live in Cape Elizabeth and have operated a 16-year practice in Portland, offering acupuncture and physical therapy, have opened Jade Integrated Health at 12 Windorf Circle.
John is an acupuncturist and Nancy is a message therapist and physical therapist. They started their business in response to physicians and patients seeking innovative approaches to such issues as pain management, rehabilitation and prenatal health. Their respective focuses treat patients in an integrative and collaborative approach, and they first joined forces in a small two-room office on Munjoy Hill in 2001 after relocating from Austin, Texas.
They said they have had fun with their growth and expansion, remaining creative in the endeavor. Nancy said the business is successful because they focus on a qualitative, not a quantitative, approach and are invested in patients’ health.
The couple chose Brunswick for the expansion because they initially wanted to live in town, and though did not make their home here, thought the next best thing would be to work in town. The Charleboises said Brunswick is a positive place — attracting young families, has a great Maine Street vision, and a vibrant business and medical community.
They hope to add to this community, hiring more people as the practice grows and the clientele base is developed.
Giving an example of the business’ approach in treating patients, John said an individual may come in for physical therapy, but also complains of insomnia or depression. Chinese herbs can be used to treat those ailments, and help to support recovery in physical therapy treatments, he said.
The new facility features four private treatment rooms, a yoga studio, a small gym and access to nature trails behind the center. An aerial yoga class will also be offered at the center, which will be unique to the Brunswick location.
In its Brunswick facility, Jade offers physical therapy, yoga therapy, acupuncture and Chinese herbs, massage, pelvic floor therapy, as well as a variety of yoga classes. Special workshops are offered throughout the year.
