A quartet of Bowdoin athletes will compete at the NCAA Division III Championship this week, hosted at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio from May 25-27.
Ben Torda, Colin Tiernan, John Pietro and Ellen Masalsky will all represent the Polar Bears at nationals.
Torda will enter nationals as the highest-seeded Polar Bear entrant as he qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:04.57 from the NESCAC Championship (April 29), ranking fourth in Division III this season. The preliminaries for the men’s steeplechase are slated for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
Tiernan’s throw of 201-00.50 in the javelin at the New England D-III Championships (May 4) earned him qualification for the NCAA Championship, where he is seeded 14th entering the competition. The javelin prelims and finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Pietro qualified for the shot put at NCAAs as his toss of 52-10 at the New England D-III meet on May 4 slotted him 20th in the nation this spring. The preliminaries and finals of the shot put are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
Masalsky qualified for the NCAA Championship in the javelin, where she sits 21st in the rankings with a throw of 136-05 from the Charleston Southern Invitational back on March 17. The women’s javelin preliminaries and finals are slated for 3 p.m. on Thursday.
