WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.

A pair of Bowdoin college athletes came away as regional champions as the Polar Bear outdoor track and field teams enjoyed a solid day at the New England Division III Championship Saturday hosted by Williams College.

As a team, the Polar Bear men finished seventh overall, while the women placed ninth.

Both Bowdoin first-year Yaw Sekyere (men’s 100-meter dash) and junior John Pietro (men’s shot put) came away with New England D-III titles with first-place finishes on Saturday. Sekyere set a school record with a blazing time of 10.75 seconds to claim the 100, while Pietro launched a distance of 52-10 in the finals to win the shot put. Sekyere also finished fifth in the 200 (21.96).

The Polar Bear men also saw school records fall in the javelin, where Colin Tiernan broke the school mark with a throw of 201-00.50 (fourth place), and in the 110 hurdles, where Joseph Staudt broke his own school mark with a time of 14.62 (third place). Brian Greenberg was fourth in the triple jump at 46- 06.25.

Sara Ory set a personal-best in placing fourth in the 400 hurdles for the Bowdoin women in a time of 1:03.87. Ellen Masalsky was fourth in the women’s javelin with a distance of 133- 06.50, while Pamela Zabala placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 122-08.50.

The women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team of Eleanor Brakewood, Demi Feder, Caroline Shipley and Meghan Bellerose placed fourth in 9:18.28.

Bowdoin will return to action with a handful of athletes competing at the Open New England Championship, also hosted at Williams, this upcoming weekend.

Women’s tennis

Bowdoin battled top-seeded Middlebury, but fell in a 5-2 decision in the semifinals of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Williams.

The Polar Bears dipped to 14- 5 and are likely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship when selections are announced later today.

Down 2-0 after two doubles losses to open the day, Bowdoin’s No. 3 pairing of Pilar Giffenig and Sasa Jovanovic rallied for a key 9-8 victory, making the deficit just 2-1 after doubles play.

Bowdoin lost the first two singles matches off the board at No. 2 and No. 3, but received a straight-set win from Joulia Likhanskaia at No. 1 (7-5, 6-3) to cut the lead to 4-2.

Despite rallying from behind in the second set, Giffenig failed to close the gap against her opponent at No. 5 singles, as Middlebury clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win.

Bowdoin rallied from a 2-1 deficit in doubles play to defeat Wesleyan, 5-3, in the opening round on Friday afternoon.

Giffenig and Jovanovic rallied to give the Polar Bears a win at No. 3 doubles, 9-8, cutting the Cardinals’ early lead to 2-1.

In singles Bowdoin chipped away, getting straight-set wins from Tess Trinka (6-2, 6-4) at No. 2, Tasha Christ at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2) and Jovanovic at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4) to take a 4-3 lead with two singles matches remaining.

Giffenig closed out the win, capturing an impressive 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to clinch the victory.

Baseball

Bowdoin pulled away late for an 8-4 win over Amherst in a game played at Colby College in Waterville on Friday afternoon.

Scoreless through the first two innings, both the Mammoths and the Polar Bears got on the board in the third. After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the frame, the Polar Bears evened the score, rallying after opening the inning with back-to-back outs. Recording Bowdoin’s third consecutive single following hits by Cody Todesco and Ejazz Jiu, Brandon Lopez powered a line drive to right field to plate Todesco, before an error by the Amherst shortstop on a failed pick-off attempt scored Jiu.

Holding the Mammoths (14- 11) scoreless in the fourth, the Polar Bears took their first lead in the bottom of the inning, as Eric Mah sent a hard hit ball into play to force an Amherst error and score Evann Dumont-LaPointe, who led off the inning with a single to short.

The teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh, with Yanni Thanopolous scoring after ripping a lead-off single to center field and Sean Mullaney successfully laying down a sacrifice bunt to plate Jack Wilhoite following his double to deep center.

Amherst notched three straight singles in the eighth to tie the score at 4-4.

The Polar Bears exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning and held the Mammoths scoreless in the ninth to capture the victory. Racking up three hits in the at-bat, Sawyer Billings and Wilhoite were the RBI getters for Bowdoin, with each hitter posting a single to plate Bjorn Hansen and Lopez, who allowed eight hits and three earned runs and fanned three in seven innings. Colby Lewis (4-3) pitched the final two innings, giving up no hits, no runs and striking out two in the winning effort.

Bowdoin dropped an 11-4 rain-shortened contest on Saturday against Middlebury at Pickard Field.

The second game was canceled.
