1. To get us started, please give us a little background and history on the Harpswell Inn.

The building was originally built in 1761 to house workers for the Curtis Estes Shipyard and was only a private residence for four brief periods.

2. Can you tell us about the services and accommodations you offer your guests?

The inn is open seven days a week year-round as a bed and breakfast. There are eight well-appointed large rooms, three suites, four cottages, plus the Middlebay Room.
There are 2 1/2 acres overlooking Middle Bay, which is the waterfront between Harpswell and Brunswick.

3. What makes the Harpswell Inn so special?
The inn is located on one of Harpswell’s peninsulas. It is close to Brunswick, Bowdoin College, and only 14 miles to either Freeport or Bath for day trips.

There is a westerly view offering fantastic sunsets every evening and our guests enjoy the peace and quiet in a country setting.
Special offers are available from November through mid-May. We provide great breakfasts — always offering a choice of an egg dish and a grilled item, fresh fruit, homemade pastry, and local roasted coffee.
4. How has the hospitality industry and tourism in Maine changed over the years?
Hospitality is Maine’s largest industry and source of revenue. Maine has been a vacation destination always — increasing over the last 50 years. Coastal areas are the most popular, but there is growing interest for inland areas with woods, water, and back to nature offerings.
What has been the “season” — July 4th through Labor Day — is expanding into shoulder seasons, both in the spring and fall.
Visitors are impressed by Maine employees with their excellent work ethic, willingness to please, knowledge of the area, and sincere attitude. In the fall, guests enjoy our many attractions with less traffic and crowds, but finding help once colleges and regular schools start up forces some places to close earlier than planned.
