Baseball is back. All Midcoast teams are beginning the new season this week. Let’s take a look at what each has ahead:

Brunswick

Luke Potter had a long season at the helm of the Dragons in 2016. An early win against “Battle of the Bridge” rival Mt. Ararat ended up being one of just three on the year.

Brunswick also lost its ace Alex Larson to graduation and will be relying on a number of different arms to eat up innings.

The new season begins today at Hampden Academy at 1 p.m. From there, the Dragons will be playing alongside the softball team for the rest of the season and will visit Mt. Ararat on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles also missed the postseason in Class A North, finishing 7-9 after a pair of losses to end the season.

Bob Neron, also having to rebuild the roster after losing seniors to graduation, will be looking to reach the postseason for the first time in his coaching tenure.

Before the “Battle of the Bridge” game with Brunswick on Monday, Mt. Ararat will travel to Messalonskee today at 1 p.m. and host Cony in the home opener on Friday (1 p.m.).

Take-two of the “Bridge” battle is slated for May 30, the last day of the season, at 4 p.m.

Morse

A 4-12 record was good enough for the No. 10 seed in Class B South, landing the Shipbuilders a preliminary game against Freeport. An eventual 5-1 loss was disappointing, but left coach Garrett Olsen with optimism for the future.

The new campaign starts on Friday vs. Erskine Academy, which the Shipbuilders defeated 5-0 in last year’s opener. Like softball, Morse will face Medomak Valley next Wednesday at 4 p.m. and host Belfast next Friday at 4 p.m. before an April 29 doubleheader against Lincoln Academy.

A strong end to the season will be key for Olsen’s squad, as nine of the final 10 games were setbacks in 2016.

Freeport

Simply put, the 2016 season was a magical one for the Falcons. Bill Ridge’s squad took off after the Class B South preliminary win over Morse, defeating York, Greely and Cape Elizabeth en route to a state championship appearance as a No. 7 seed.

If the Falcons want to reach the postseason again, Josh Burke will need to take over for graduated Jack Davenport as ace of the staff. Burke, who started the state final against Old Town, is one of a handful of returning pitchers that saw time on the hill.

The 2017 schedule gets going on Friday at 11 a.m. against Lake Region. The Falcons will then have three straight home games next week before traveling down to Old Orchard Beach on May 2.

A rematch with Greely is slated for May 24.

Lisbon

The Greyhounds, under Randy Ridley, will be looking to build off a deep postseason run 2016. Lis- bon won three games over Carrabec, Madison and St. Dominic Academy before narrowly falling to Sacopee Valley in the Class C South regional final.

For many seniors like ace Tyler Halls, 2017 is one last chance at a state championship at Lisbon.

Much of the team will be back for the new season, which begins today (1 p.m.) with a rematch against Carrabec. On Friday, a rivalry game with Oak Hill is slated for 4 p.m.

The Greyhounds will end the season with home games against Boothbay and Monmouth on May 26-27.

Wiscasset

Due to limited numbers, Wiscasset will not be playing a varsity baseball schedule this season.

A handful of varsity players will be playing on the junior varsity team, which will play an eight-game schedule.

Richmond

The Bobcats, which finished 11-5 and earned the No. 3 seed in Class D South last season, kicked off the 2017 campaign with a 5-0 win over Vinalhaven/ North Haven on Tuesday.

Richmond, under Ryan Gardner, will be looking to get back to the postseason for the seventh straight season and get past the semifinals, where last year’s season ended with a loss to Valley.

Gardner and company will now hit the road, battling North Yarmouth Academy on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Sacopee Valley on Saturday at 11 a.m.
