WELLS — The Warriors topped visiting Yarmouth 56- 12 in the Class C South quarterfinals, Saturday.
Yarmouth beat Wells in a heartbreaking conference final matchup last season, and the Warriors were excited to get some revenge on the Clippers.
“We felt like we did what we wanted to do. We spread the ball around a lot, we tell the kids that we want to impose our will and today they did. We have a tough game next against Fryeburg so we’ll see what we got,” said Wells head coach Tim Roche.
The Warriors wasted little time jumping ahead of Yarmouth, beginning with a touchdown rush from Evan Whitten less than three minutes into the first quarter.
Riley Dempsey would then add another touchdown just 13 seconds later after a Yarmouth turnover, giving Wells the quick 14-0 advantage.
“We wanted to get off to a fast start, we got up 14-0 quick and had them reeling … that was exactly what we talked about. That’s tough for a team to come back from,” said Roche.
Nick Hansen would rush for a 14-yard score, followed by another rushing score from Dempsey to extend the Wells lead to 29-0 late in the first quarter.
Whitten would take a 53-yard rush in for the score to make the score 36-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Warriors would score two more touchdowns in the second quarter, one from Deandre Woods on a 34-yard reception, and the second coming from a 74- yard rushing score from Dempsey.
The Clippers battled back in the second half, limiting the amount of damage the Warriors imposed. Caleb Chase would score Wells’ final touchdown late in the fourth quarter to wrap up the win.
“It’s what we needed. Coming off a tough loss, we talked all week about being angry about losing the game … maybe making some mistakes, we talked all week about correcting what we did wrong,” said Roche.
Although the Warriors won big, Roche and his staff plan on addressing some issues in the upcoming days.
“There are definitely some things we want to work on. We have another week of practice and that’s what I told the kids, we have another week.”
Looking ahead to the semifinals, the Warriors look forward to competing for another week.
“When you lose you sometimes start questioning yourself, you question whether or not you did this right or that right and if you’re really that good. So a win like this really helps get our confidence back,” said Roche. “I think they’re confident, not overconfident, but I think they want to bring it to Fryeburg. They’re already excited.”
