McDougal Orchards is a seventh-generation family farm in southern Maine located a mile from downtown Sanford. The orchard features fresh cider donuts out in the Donut Shack as well as miles of walking trails, farm animals, a picnic area, a corn maze and a fairy village where visitors can build a woodland house. The orchard also offers its grounds as a wedding venue, and provides a unique spot for photography sessions.
“For 225 years, each generation of the Hanson/McDougal family has done its part in keeping their farm going,” said Bob McDougal. “Today, thanks to the efforts of our daughter Ellen, our son, and many public agency partners, we’re granting an agricultural conservation easement on our farm. We are doing this to slow sprawl and protect farmland to make good land available for future farmers in York County.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
