BAILEY ISLAND — Donald Wesley Coffin, 87, of Bailey Island, passed away with his wife, children and grandchildren by his side at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick, ME on Oct 4, 2016.

He was born in Brunswick, the son of Carroll and Beulah (White) Coffin. Early schools include Growstown School which he liked to revisit and he later graduated from Brunswick High school in 1947.

In 1947 he married Shirley M Leeman and they resided on Church Rd, Brunswick and later moved their family to Bailey Island.

He worked for his father in the Coffin Ice business on Harpswell St, Brunswick and Marriner Lumber driving a logging truck to many places in Maine and Canada. Most of his career was spent driving a tractor trailer in New England for JJ Nissen’s bakery. He was a proud Teamster and was shop steward for many years.

His hobbies included gardening which he loved, the gift he received from his parents. He loved bird watching, always making sure they got the best he could offer. He loved his Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots and like his father never missed a game. He was dedicated to taking care of his home, family and pets and enjoyed all of his grandchildren, taking great pride in filming every thing they did. He kept detailed scrapbooks of local and family history. He loved driving to Florida with his wife and taking all the backroads to sightsee, as well as talking to other truckers from around the East coast on his CB. He found great pleasure in going down to Coffin Ice Pond to sit and enjoy the beauty of his childhood home where he could envision his late father, brothers and a crew of local men cutting ice for the summer season.
