Outlook: Week in and week out through the preseason, the Gentlemen Eagles have continued to sharpen their running. “Ten of our returning 15 athletes who ran again at the Lake Region Invitational reduced their race times from last year’s results, some improving by seconds others by over four minutes,” says Riddle. The squad aim to make States for the ninth consecutive year, and in fact have loftier aspirations for the Championship than simply reaching it: “They have a much bigger vision for this season,” says Riddle. To emerge from the pack victorious, however, they’re taking a day-by-day approach: “They will simply train hard each week and run their assignments at their weekly meets, hoping be highly competitive sportsmen…[against] some of the top XC runners in Class A.” Riddle’s girls, on the other hand, are a mix of veterans and newbies. “All of them are such highly coachable athletes,” Riddle says of his girls, “that the team is maturing very quickly, faster than expected, so they look for significant improvements each week…If they can learn to truly ‘fight for it,’ they will most likely surprise themselves and many of us with their end-of-season results.” Applebee and Turner will set the pace for the 21-strong Lady Eagles, who also intend to return to States.

Outlook: Looking to reconstruct a program that struggled last year, DiDonato returns to the helm this fall after coaching at Windham from 2003-2008. “I am looking forward to a great season with this hardworking group of athletes,” she says. “They pushed themselves to the limit during double sessions in preseason and really worked on breaking down and perfecting their skills.” The Eagles eagerly anticipate matching their honed approach against top contenders like those listed above, and believe they can reel in some of the big wins that slipped off their lines last fall. “We have a strong group that is hungry to win and with an offensive-minded defense, I think we will go much further this season,” DiDonato says.

Outlook: “The Eagles will be a very young team in 2016,” says Manzo. “The top six players from last season have all graduated and moved on.” Millett is the only returner from last year’s starting seven, which earned a slot at States. “Evan played in the seven-spot all of last season, and will be relied on heavily to lead this young group, none of whom have actually played in a varsity match,” says Manzo.

Outlook: “We are a young program with a focus on developing a concept of play that relies on team unity,” says LeBlanc. “The entire season will depend on how well we possess the soccer ball. We cannot afford to turn over the ball, especially in our defensive third. This is a group of hard working student athletes, and we are committed to supporting each other as we try to improve.” The Eagles will have to contend with not just the loss of last year’s veterans to graduation in June, but also the loss of the talented Nick Rose, who broke his leg in preseason.

Outlook: Lebel’s key players are her only four seniors, meaning her squad is comparatively young this year. Still, the Eagles have been one of the best, if not the single best, outfit in the State for the past few years, and can be expected to continue putting on quite a show this fall. “We have some young talent that will still make us a contender among the top teams,” Lebel says. Lebel names a number of other critical players, above and beyond her elder statesmen: “Junior Maggie Lloyd and sophomore Meghan Hoffses provide us with offensive speed,” she says. “Maggie Symonds, 2015 SMAA First-Team, will help anchor the midfield. Sara Barrett, 2015 SMAA Second-Team, and junior Kaitlyn Roberts in goal will anchor our defense.” Expect the proud Windham tradition to weather its growing pains admirably.

With focus, Windham looks to position themselves with another run at the playoffs.”
