BELGRADE (AP) — The Belgrade Historical Society is moving forward with plans to renovate the 1815 building that served as Belgrade’s annual town meeting site until 1873.

The Kennebec Journal reports the historical society is seeking to make cosmetic improvements to the Old Townhouse and add a basement so the building can be used as their headquarters.

The group recently entered an agreement with the town for use of the space.

Historical society chairman Dennis Keschl says the intent of the project is not to renovate the structure to its original condition because it’s unknown what it used to look like in its entirety. Instead, the renovation will highlight areas of the structure believed to be original.
