AUGUSTA (AP) — Officials in Augusta have proposed that the city purchase a portable stage for $80,000 to replace the gazebo that was removed from a downtown waterfront park this past spring.
The Kennebec Journal reports the request was among several items listed in City Manager William Bridgeo’s recommended $2.9 million capital improvement plan for 2017.
Ralph St. Pierre, Augusta’s finance director and assistant city manager, says the stage would be self-contained and on wheels so it could be folded up and towed to other venues for performances.
The old wooden gazebo was initially due for a $7,000 face-lift, but it started coming apart. City officials agreed the gazebo was no longer usable and it was removed.
City Councilor Darek Grant says the stage would help bring more cultural events to Augusta.
